Mission Statement
Nassau County Young Democrats is dedicated to empowering young people to create a positive impact on their communities through a combination of political engagement and charitable work. We believe that both are critical components of creating lasting change.
On the political front, we work to promote progressive policies and endorse Democratic candidates who share our values. We recognize the power of the political process to shape our communities and advocate for issues that directly affect young people, such as climate change, income inequality, and social justice. We engage in voter registration drives, canvassing, and phone banking to encourage more young people to participate in the political process and make their voices heard. In addition to our political work, we also prioritize charitable efforts to support our community. We volunteer regularly with organizations such as the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund, which provides support and opportunities for young people in our community. We also hold fundraisers to support causes that align with our values and work to make a positive impact on the lives of those around us. Through a combination of political engagement and charitable work, we believe that we can create a more just and equitable society. Our organization is committed to using our collective voice to drive meaningful change and ensure that young people are empowered to make a difference in their communities. Millennials, the generation born between 1981 and 1996, and Gen Z, born between 1997 and 2012, currently comprise a significant portion of the eligible voting population, accounting for about 37%. However, despite this large share, their participation in elections has been historically low. In both 2016 and 2012, only 45% of Millennials turned out to vote, and the number drops even further to around 20% during mid-term elections.
But there is reason to be hopeful. In the 2020 presidential election, young voters under the age of 36 turned out at a higher rate than in previous elections. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, voter turnout among 18- to 29-year-olds increased from 46% in 2016 to 53% in 2020, and turnout among 30- to 39-year-olds increased from 58% to 63%. This suggests that more young people are realizing the importance of their vote and the impact they can have on elections. However, we can't let our guard down. The Republican Party took control of our county in 2021 and the House of Representatives in 2022. Now is the time for the next generation to organize to win back control. |
